Power BI and Meteor AI agents

Connect Power BI to a Met: ask your semantic models questions on WhatsApp and get answers from a DAX query on your data, with your permissions.

How do I ask my Power BI data questions from WhatsApp?

With the Power BI ready connector, your Met queries Power BI semantic models with the Microsoft account that authorizes the connection. It reads the model's structure (tables, columns, measures and relationships) and a report's, builds a DAX query and runs it, so you can ask on WhatsApp how much was sold last week or which are the top ten products and get the number your model gives. It only queries: it does not create or change models or reports. It needs the Power BI administrator to turn the server on in the tenant and you to register an app in Microsoft Entra ID to paste its client ID into Met.

What it automates

What a Meteor Met does with Power BI

Answer a sales question on WhatsApp

You ask the Met how much was sold yesterday by city. The Met reads the sales semantic model's structure, builds the DAX query, runs it and replies with the number your model gives.

Use the report your team already built as a guide

Before querying, the Met reads the report your team uses, its pages, filters and fields, so it asks for the same measures and does not invent a calculation different from the dashboard's.

Check figures without opening the dashboard

The owner or the manager asks on WhatsApp for the ten best-selling products of the month. The Met queries the model and returns the list, with the connected account's permissions.

4 tools

Everything your Met can ask Power BI for

Each one is a real action in the connector. You can switch off the ones you would rather it never used.

Tool What it does
execute_query Runs a DAX query against a Power BI semantic model and returns the results.
get_semantic_model_schema Brings a semantic model's structure, with tables, columns, measures, relationships and the author's guidance.
get_report_metadata Brings a report's structure, with its pages, visuals, filters and the model it uses.
generate_query Writes a DAX query from a natural language question, with the Power BI AI engine.

The limits

What the Power BI integration does NOT do

We would rather say it here than have you find out during rollout.

Before you start

What you need to connect Power BI

  1. 1

The Power BI MCP server turned on in your tenant

The Power BI administrator turns on the tenant setting "Users can use the Power BI Model Context Protocol server endpoint (preview)". The connecting account also needs Build permission on the semantic models the Met will query.

  2. 2

An app registered in Microsoft Entra ID

The admin goes to the Microsoft Entra ID portal, registers an app, adds the redirect URL Met shows and copies its Application (client) ID. That client ID is what Met needs to sign in with Microsoft.

  3. 3

    Connect Power BI in Met

In Met, open Connections → Power BI → Connect, paste your app's client ID and tap Connect. The Microsoft window opens so you can sign in and authorize Met.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Power BI and Meteor

Because Microsoft Entra ID does not let an application register itself. The admin registers Met's app in your tenant, adds the redirect URL Met shows and pastes the client ID. It is a one-time step.

No. The four tools on this server query: they read the structure and run DAX queries. None of them creates or edits a report or a model.

Yes, when the query runs with a person's account, which is how Met connects. Microsoft warns that it does not apply with a service principal, so it is best to connect with a user account.

You do, with your Microsoft licenses. Meteor does not resell Power BI: the connector uses your organization's account and licenses.
