How to choose the right AI agent for your business, without starting from the tool
How to choose an AI agent for your business: why you start from the question that repeats most and not from a platform's feature list.
How do I choose the right AI agent for my business?
By the question that interrupts you most, not by the feature list. Write down for a week what you get asked over and over, separate the ones with a single verifiable answer from the ones that need a decision, and start with the first on that list whose data also lives in a system you can connect. That combination, repeated plus single answer plus connected source, is what defines which agent is right for you. Choosing the other way round, from the catalogue, ends in something that works in the demo and goes unused by month two.
The most common way to choose badly is to start by looking at features. Every platform lists more or less the same ones, they all look good in the demo, and the decision ends up being made on price or on who replied first.
The order that works is the reverse: first what to solve, then with what.
A week of writing things down
It is the step nobody wants to take and the one that sorts everything out. For one week, write down what you get asked over and over. No tool required: a list will do.
By the end of the week the same thing almost always happens: three or four questions account for most of them, and one of those accounts for a good deal more than the rest.
Separate the ones with a single answer
From that list, which ones have one verifiable answer (where is my order, is it available, how much does it cost, when is the deadline) and which ones need a decision: a discount, an exception, a complaint.
The first kind is what an agent solves today. The second kind is not automated; it is prepared, and that is worth something too, but it is a different thing.
The third condition, the one people forget
That the data lives in a system you can connect to. A repeated question with a single answer whose source lives in somebody’s head or in a file updated by hand is not ready: the agent will answer whatever that file says, and at that point the problem is not the agent.
That is why the integrations catalogue matters more than the feature list: it defines what can genuinely be answered.
Only then, the agent
With the question chosen, crossing it against the catalogue of Mets is quick: there is almost always one built for it. And if the question needs something executed and not just answered, the difference between a script and an agent is what decides which of the two you are looking for.
What sorts the list faster than any comparison
Seeing what a similar business did. The case studies tend to settle in ten minutes a discussion that has been running for weeks, because they show where the real bottleneck was rather than the one you imagined.
And choosing wrong costs little
A badly chosen agent gets used for two weeks and switched off. The expensive mistake is the other one: starting with the most complex thing, never finishing it, and concluding that none of this worked.
The limits
What this article does NOT answer
We would rather say it here than leave you hunting for something that is not there.
-
There is no agent that does everything: the one that does everything usually does the important part badly.
-
This does not compare platforms or say which is best: it orders the decision before that, which is what to solve.
-
It does not estimate how much you will save: that number depends on your operation and comes from measuring it.

With whatever interrupts you most today. If the sales team loses hours answering the same thing, it is sales; if the inbox is full every morning, it is support. The answer is usually obvious once it is written down.
No, but you do need the system where the first case's answer lives. Without it the agent answers from memory, and an answer from memory is the one somebody has to walk back later.
You find out fast and it costs little: a badly chosen agent gets used for two weeks and then switched off. The expensive mistake is the other one, starting with the most complex and never getting it live.
