Abandoned carts: what an AI agent can do that an automated email cannot

How to recover abandoned carts with an AI agent over WhatsApp: what it checks before writing, what it can settle in the conversation and when not to push.

How do you recover an abandoned cart without sounding like an automated debt collector?

The difference from an automated email is that the agent can answer the reason the person did not finish buying. Before writing it checks whether the order is still unpaid and whether the product is still available; in the conversation it settles the specific doubt that stopped the purchase, sends the payment link again and records the outcome. What it does not do is invent a discount to close, or keep pushing someone who already said no: a cart is not a debt.

An abandoned cart is not a lost sale: it is an interrupted one. And it is almost always interrupted for a specific reason nobody got to ask about. Shipping cost showed up at the end, the payment method they use was missing, they were unsure about the size, they wanted to know when it arrives.

The automated recovery email cannot answer any of those. It sends the same text to all four.

Check before writing

Writing to somebody who has already paid is the fastest way to have the message read as spam. So the first step is not the message but the lookup: is the order still pending? Is the product still available?

The WooCommerce recovery recipe does exactly that before opening the conversation. If the status changed, there is no message.

The conversation is the point, not the reminder

When the person replies “I’m not sure it gets here before Friday” or “do you have another size?”, the agent can look it up and answer. That is where the sale comes back, and it is precisely what an email does not do.

The same applies when the doubt is about an order that already exists: the Shopify status lookup settles the question with the real data instead of asking the person to go and find it.

Where the line sits

An abandoned cart is not a debt. Someone who has not replied twice does not want a third message, and someone who said no has already answered.

Nor is it closed by inventing. If the discount does not exist in the store, offering it creates a problem somebody has to solve later: either you honour something nobody planned for, or you tell a customer that what they were promised was not true. The closing Met has that boundary declared rather than deciding it in the moment.

What gets recorded

The boring part, and the one that makes this improvable: why it did not close. If half the carts fall over shipping cost, that is not fixed by writing better messages, and you only know it if somebody writes it down. The ecommerce solution has the whole path, from the store to the record.

Questions on this topic

There is no number that works for every business. What always applies is checking before writing: if the order has been paid or the product sold out, the message is noise and it annoys.

That is the part an automated email cannot do. The agent answers the question against the store, and if the answer needs an exception it hands the case over with what has already been said.

It works for any order the store marks as pending. What changes is what "pending" means in each operation, and that is defined by the store, not by the agent.
