Unofficial WhatsApp APIs: what you risk and what Meta’s terms say

What you risk connecting WhatsApp through a QR code or an unofficial API: a suspended number, exposed data and bulk sends Meta prohibits.

Is it safe to use an unofficial WhatsApp API to automate my business?

Not for a business that depends on its number. An unofficial API runs WhatsApp outside Meta’s platform, usually by scanning the QR code as if it were WhatsApp Web, and WhatsApp’s Terms of Service prohibit using the service through unauthorized automated means, sending bulk or automated messages and creating software that functions like its services. When Meta detects it, it can suspend or disable the account, and the number stops receiving anything. The official route is the WhatsApp Business API, with business verification, approved templates to message first and a messaging policy that requires consent and a path to a person.

The offers sound alike: connect your WhatsApp in a minute, no business verification, no templates and unlimited messages at any hour. You scan a QR code with your phone and you are done. It works, which is why it sells. The problem is not technical: it runs outside Meta’s platform, and Meta’s terms say so in plain words.

What is an unofficial WhatsApp API?

It is software that automates the WhatsApp app instead of using the WhatsApp Business API. The most common form opens a WhatsApp Web session on a server, by scanning your phone’s QR code, and from there reads and sends messages as if a person were typing. There is no business registration with Meta and no templates, and nobody applies the platform’s sending limits. That is why there is no paperwork.

What do Meta’s terms say?

WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, in their acceptable use section, prohibit among other things:

What they prohibitHow it collides with an unofficial API
Illegal or impermissible communications such as bulk messaging, auto-messaging and auto-dialingIt is exactly what is being sold: sends without templates at any hour
Using the service through automated or other unauthorized meansA program drives the WhatsApp Web session, not a person
Creating software or APIs that function substantially the same as their servicesAn API built on top of the app replicates the service without authorization
Creating accounts through unauthorized or automated meansIt reaches anyone registering numbers automatically to operate them that way
Collecting user information in an unauthorized mannerThe session exposes every chat on the number

The same terms say WhatsApp may modify, suspend or terminate access, including disabling or suspending the account. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy adds, for those on the official route, that it may limit or remove access for anyone who breaks it.

What exactly do you risk?

  1. The number. When the account is suspended, nothing gets in: customers, orders, support. And that number is the one on your invoices, your site and your ads.
  2. Your customers’ data. The session open on someone else’s server sees every conversation. Whoever runs it has the same access as your phone.
  3. Your sending reputation. What is sold as unlimited messages is what the terms call bulk messaging. Customer blocks and reports do not go away because you used another route.
  4. The work you put in. Flows, replies and automations built on that connection fall with it.

What changes with the official API?

The WhatsApp Business API guide explains how to get access, and the app or the API helps you decide whether you need it.

How to move off an unofficial connection

  1. Export what you can from the current tool: contacts and frequent replies.
  2. Shut down the old session. Log out the WhatsApp Web session the provider opened, from Linked devices on your phone: while it stays open, it keeps seeing the chats.
  3. Connect the line through the official API with Meta’s signup, in your business’s name. If you want to keep using the phone on the same number, coexistence works with the WhatsApp Business app, not the personal app.
  4. Write your templates for what you send first today: reminders, confirmations, collections. Meta reviews them before they go out.

How Meteor does it

Meteor is a Meta Business Partner and connects your line through the official WhatsApp Business API with Meta’s embedded signup: the account stays yours and access is a permission you can withdraw. With coexistence you can keep using the phone app on the same number and import contacts and up to six months of chats; Meta enables it number by number. Conversations stay in the CRM and the WhatsApp agent works on the official line. If what you needed was to build, the API and webhooks are on the Developers page.

What this is not

This is not legal advice. Meta’s terms are quoted as published, accessed on October 28, 2026, and Meta may change them.

Questions on this topic

If connecting required scanning a QR code with your phone, as in WhatsApp Web, it is not using the WhatsApp Business API. The official route connects through Meta’s signup, in your business’s name, and requires approved templates to message first outside the 24-hour window.

Because it does not go through Meta’s platform. That same absence is what exposes it: the Terms of Service prohibit bulk or automated messaging and use through unauthorized automated means.

Not necessarily. Meteor supports coexistence: you can keep using the WhatsApp Business phone app on the same number and import contacts and up to six months of chats. Meta enables it number by number, and files older than 14 days in the history are not imported.

A WhatsApp Web session open on someone else’s server sees every conversation on that number. In Colombia, Law 1581 of 2012 requires protecting data with security measures, and handing the whole session to an unchecked third party is hard to justify under that duty.
